I exchanged blackberry photos with close friends and was delighted by their childhood tales of blackberry picking. One observed that there appeared to be more blackberries in the past than present. I believe this is accurate. Despite its modest urban setting, Florence is abundant with blackberries, found in numerous woods and along streets lined with vacant lots and absent sidewalks. This, to me, is the allure of Florence—its almost vacant and secluded nature, which existed long before COVID-19. San Francisco's urban hills, like the summit of Sanchez Street above the Castro and the shrubs on the cliffs above Land's End beach, were abundant with blackberries and juicy plums that we'd spend hours eating.
As a child, I fondly recall my grandmother preparing blackberries and dumplings with the fresh blackberries we picked or from those she preserved for winter. The taste of those blackberries and dumplings was unique to her touch, and I doubt they would taste the same now. Currently, I'm facing an issue with fleas and insects in the park; their bites and stings are relentless. Despite efforts to combat them, it seems futile.
