It is 29 degrees in Florence, SC. A guard dog barks at me behind a chain-link fence over by Greyhound, so I go to a store and buy it a treat. Now it likes me and stops barking. The beautiful moon is visible in a light blue sky as wind blows an American flag wildly in front of the Public Library. After biking downhill to a dirt road at the edge of the city. the setting and the weather is different. There are no people or cars. I am alone in the vast woods where I hear an echo of a running creek.

Soule Cafe is located on Irby Street in downtown Florence, SC. Patrons are mostly college-age Francis Marion University students. Mostly black artwork of local artists adorns the cavernous space with wood and leather seats. Cocktails are served on Monday nights when local musicians play on a stage in the back area. Wednesday night is open mike.
The owner of Soule is a hometown musician who left Florence for many years; then returned to invest in his hometown by opening the cafe. The setting is edgy, but the coffee is not. Asking for an espresso presents a problem with no espresso cups. But that, too, was a mistake. The espresso served was pretty bad. |
