Dealing with abusive behavior, especially when it stems from substance abuse, can be incredibly challenging. I am not saying you should give up on them even though the situation might seem hopeless. It's essential to prioritize your safety and well-being with an abuser. Setting clear boundaries with individuals who exhibit abusive behavior is crucial for your mental and emotional well-being.
Start first by identifying what you are and are not willing to tolerate. Then, communicate your boundaries clearly, using "I" statements to express how their behavior affects you. This might prove difficult if this is not your house but do it anyway. Be assertive yet calm, and do not overexplain or justify your boundaries. If your boundaries are not respected, consider the consequences you are willing to enforce and be prepared to follow through. Remember, boundaries are not about controlling the other person's actions but about respecting and protecting your own well-being. Additionally, local support groups and helplines can offer guidance and a sense of community. Remember, it's important to protect yourself emotionally and physically, and there's no shame in asking for help when you need it.
