If Florence had a skyline, it wouldn’t be defined by buildings but by the towering pylon signs that dominate its landscape—especially along the I-95 corridor. These colossal structures loom over the city, standing taller than trees, buildings, and practically anything else that might compete for attention. Their job? To lure passing drivers into roadside hotels, fast-food joints, and gas stations with promises of comfort, convenience, and maybe even a decent meal.
Nowhere in South Carolina—except, perhaps, South of the Border, with its carnival of signs—will you find such an overwhelming concentration of these roadside giants. Every hotel has one. Every restaurant stakes its claim in the sky. McDonald's, of course, boasts one of the tallest, soaring high above the nearby Econo Lodge as if challenging other businesses to rise to its level. If you ever find yourself in Florence with time to kill and a wandering mind, take a moment to appreciate this towering spectacle. Count the signs. Study their variations. Notice which ones have aged gracefully and which are fighting against time. In a city where urban sprawl can quickly dull the senses, these ever-reaching pylons add a strange and striking character to the landscape.
