Abel (the antagonist) was eager to get to the bottom of the matter and determined to unravel the mystery of Travis Weatherford's relationship with Abel's Zeno Eliot. Checking his watch, he recalled his meeting with Zaide and realized he was five minutes behind schedule. Hastily finishing his espresso, he left the uneaten half of his croissant on the plate, dashed out of the café, and hurried along Sutter Street toward Zaide's office. The marble lobby at 450 Sutter Street Office Building stood as one of the city's most magnificent. Abel particularly enjoyed visiting, not just for its grandeur, but also because the elevator attendant always greeted him by name. Enigmatic neo-Mayan designs in gold and silver adorned the elevator doors, while interlacing chrome patterns ascended towards the radiant light fixtures, suspended like inverted ancient pyramids. Imposing faces, carved into bronze, surveyed the marble expanse, as they had since the Roaring Twenties. He exited the elevator on the 24th floor and made his way to Zaide’s office, which offered a city view extending from Nob Hill to the Golden Gate Bridge. Zaide's charming secretary, Charlemagne, offered him more coffee, which he declined, saying he had already had enough for the day. As Charlemagne ushered him into the office and closed the door, Zaide greeted him with a warm hug, removed his overcoat and scarf, and settled him into the leather chair facing her organized desk with legal textbooks, statutes, and case law references within arm's reach. ..
