While tourists often enjoy riding San Francisco cable cars, locals have various reasons why they might not use cable cars as frequently:

1. Practicality: For daily commuting, locals often opt for more efficient and modern transportation options. Cable cars can be slower and less practical for regular travel, especially when compared to buses, streetcars, or the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit).
2. Crowds and Wait Times: The turnaround points for cable cars, such as Powell & Market and Fisherman’s Wharf, tend to be busy with tourists. Locals might avoid these areas due to long lines and wait times. Instead, they prefer catching a cable car already en route at less crowded stops.
3. A single ride costs $8 for everyone, with no transfers or roundtrips allowed. Seniors over 65 pay a reduced fare of $4 before 7 am or after 9 pm. Locals might find other forms of public transportation more cost-effective.
4. Accessibility: Unlike other MUNI transportation, cable cars are not wheelchair accessible. This limitation can be a significant factor for locals who rely on accessible transportation options.​

Despite these factors, cable cars remain an integral part of San Francisco’s charm and history. For visitors, riding a cable car is still a must-do experience, offering scenic views and a taste of the city’s past.
