The Mission-style burrito stands as San Francisco's enduring gift to Mexican cuisine. El Faro on Folsom Street used to craft the ideal burrito that I adored, despite the distance from my home. They also had, and perhaps still maintain, a second location on First Street at Mission in the Financial District, where I would occasionally visit with colleagues back in the day our next office meeting.
Happy Birthday, today, August 1, to Taia Cecil Lockhart, who hired me into Bank of America at Residential Lending Program Management when I was a youngster...The Lockharts became back then my California family since I spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with them as well.

A post-lunch photo (2003) of Patty Lum, Charles Pearson, and Diane Wong at Chevy's in Embarcadero 3 captures a fond memory. Chevy's was a favored dining spot for San Francisco FiDi district Executive Assistants. We worked together then at Electronic Banking Services for Charles Schwab. My boss then was a great Jewish woman from Westchester County, NY, named Alex Roddy. God! I loved Alex. We had so much fun at work and after hours in the French Alley. Originally headquartered on Montgomery Street in San Francisco, where Charles Schwab was founded, we eventually relocated to a new Schwab-owned building on Fremont Street, close to the East Bay Transit Center, now known as the Salesforce Tower and a new Transit Center with a breath-taking urban park on the roof.
There's something truly special about getting caught in a tropical rain, especially in a beautiful and serene place like Kauai Island. That was long ago it seems for Sir Charles when he was invited to vacation in Kauai Island. Kauai's rural charm and natural beauty made it a unique destination compared to the bustling Oahu or anywhere else I had been at that point in time.
Chickens crossing the road, the main highway to Princeville where we went grocery shopping and had brunch and dinner on occasions, always held up traffic because it's illegal to kill them, so we just had to wait in our jeep until the last chicken crossed to the other side. Some mornings were chilly and foggy on the island and after the rooster stopped crowing from underneath the house, I would take a long walk and get plenty of sun by the ocean or a rushing river nearby. As long as I stayed out of the botanical garden where our friend Nancy worked, I didn't get eaten alive by Hawaii's monstrous mosquitoes that devoured me. My favorite thing to do though was feeding the cows and a horse on a ranch that was practically in our backyard. At first the cow and its calf's long tongue frightened me; but they were gentle taking food out of my hand that I got used to it and was no longer afraid of them. Our stay was in a modest beach front house that was owned by a couple who lived in Pennsylvania. The house was their vacation house that they rented out for $5k a month and was situated across the road from a forested property that belonged to Pierce Brosnan. Brosnan's beach house too was modest and similar to others along the beach, but his house was brighter and because of his ownership that added a touch of Hollywood glamour and mystery, with the anticipation of possibly running into Brosnan and his wife on the beach. Kauai's landscapes, from its stunning beaches to its majestic mountains and lush gardens were indeed a paradise to remember. |
