Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, has been involved in many significant events in U.S. history. During the Civil War, the largest surrender of Union troops occurred in Harpers Ferry. After the slaves were freed, Harpers Ferry became the home of the Rainbow Coalition anti-discrimination organization. John Brown John Brown's raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory in 1859 brought attention to the controversy over slavery, eventually leading to the Civil War. Brown, a white abolitionist, and his army of 21 men held the Armory for 36 hours before being captured by U.S. Marines. He was later convicted of treason, conspiracy and murder, and hanged for his crimes. The Civil War During the Civil War, control over Harpers Ferry switched eight times in a five-year span. The town was repeatedly burned and damaged, causing most of the population to flee and destroying the local economy. African-American History African-American slaves were brought to the town in the mid-1700s by Robert Harper. While Harpers Ferry was under Union control during the Civil War, it served as a refuge for runaway slaves. After the Civil War, Storer College was established in Harpers Ferry as an institution for educating the newly freed slaves. REFERENCE:
